Helping a Loved One
How to Convince a Loved One to Seek Treatment for Depression
Watching someone you love suffer from depression can be very upsetting. You want to help them feel better, but are unsure of how to approach the situation. Make sure that before you engage your loved one in a conversation about their depression you take the time to learn as much as you can about the disorder. When you do speak to your loved one, be sure that you really listen to what they are saying and make it clear that their feelings are valid. Suggest that a psychiatric treatment center may be beneficial to help them to work through their emotional pain and tell them that there are trained professionals dedicated to helping them create a brighter future.
It is also important to make sure that you are taking care of your needs as well. Locate community groups in conjunction with a psychiatric hospital or elsewhere that you can go to for support or reach out to a therapist yourself. If you aren’t taking care of yourself, you won’t be any help to your loved one. The best thing you can do is be there for your family member throughout the entire process.
Why Consider Us
Why Consider Inpatient Treatment at North Tampa Behavioral Health
Depression is a serious illness that can cause significant distress and disruption in your life. People with depression find it very difficult to function on a daily basis; you may have lost interest in activities that you once enjoyed, have problems at work or school due to lack of concentration, or find that your personal relationships are suffering. You may also feel fatigued, irritable, and that nothing will ever get better. Some people have described depression as “living in a black hole.” In severe cases of depression, this disorder can become so debilitating that you are unable to even get out of bed. If these problems are not addressed, depression symptoms can become worse and potentially end in suicide and seeking treatment & a depression treatment center or hospital becomes imperative.
Inpatient treatment for depression has been shown to be one of the most effective forms of intervention available. Psychiatric treatment centers are designed to make you feel comfortable and supported as you work through your depression.

Types of Therapy
Types of Therapy We Use to Treat Depression
There are a number of different treatment options available at inpatient treatment centers to help people suffering with depression. However, the most common form of treatment includes a combination of medication and therapeutic modalities. At our psychiatric hospital, we look at the whole person and make treatment plans based on your individual needs.
Depending upon what you and your treatment team decide, medication may be a part of a short or long-term plan to help manage your depression. Common types of medications used to treat depression include antidepressants and anti-anxiety agents, as well as medications to treat co-occurring disorders. As you progress through your recovery journey, you may be able to be weaned off your medication as you learn different coping strategies for your problems. Some of the therapies we offer include:
Group Therapy is a major component of therapy we use at our treatment center. These sessions may include process groups, psycho-educational groups, and skill-based groups. Process groups allow you to work through your struggles and concerns about your depression in a supportive environment. Psycho-educational groups will educate you about your depression, any medications you may have been prescribed, and other topics related to your depression. Additional groups could include stress management, assertiveness training, social skills training, and effective coping techniques.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been shown to be the most effective type of therapy when it comes to treating depression. During CBT, you will explore the negative ways you think and learn how to challenge and replace those thoughts with more positive ways of looking at the world.
Family consultation is used to determine any family dynamics that may contribute to your depression. Family involvement is an important part of the recovery process. Additionally, your family will be connected with appropriate outside resources in Tampa or elsewhere where they can learn about depression, treatments that are used to treat depression, and how to cope with their own feelings.
Continuing Care
Continuing Care – What Comes Next?
Once you and your treatment team have decided that you no longer require inpatient treatment, a discharge plan will be put in place to ensure you are able to continue your recovery after you have walked out of our doors. In the event that you do not feel ready to leave the inpatient setting, a residential treatment center may be the appropriate next step. For many people, aftercare treatment programs may include a step down to our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). These programs are structured much like inpatient programs, but vary in the hours and days of the week that treatment is provided
In the event that you are being discharged home, we will collaborate with local providers to help you set up an appropriate outpatient treatment plan. We will also connect you with community support in your area so that you can continue your treatment and recovery on an outpatient basis.
