North Tampa Behavioral Health Hospital provides specialized care for senior adults who are struggling with mental health concerns and substance use disorders. With both inpatient and outpatient offerings, we are able to provide an appropriate level of care that helps seniors live their lives to the fullest.
Senior Programming Overview
Senior adults often experience symptoms of mental health disorders and addiction differently than other populations do.
At North Tampa Behavioral Health Hospital, we’ve designed our programming for older adults with that in mind. It’s important that each patient receives age-appropriate care that addresses their treatment goals, highlights their strengths, and treats their specific needs so that they can experience the best possible outcomes.
We accept patients who have a primary diagnosis of either a mental health or substance use disorder. Generally speaking, some of the most common concerns we treat include:
- Depression
- Anxiety disorders
- Bipolar disorder
- Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Schizophrenia
- Schizoaffective disorder
- Suicidal ideation
- Addiction to alcohol or other drugs
We do provide treatment for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia as a secondary diagnosis if patients have other presenting symptoms of a mental health concern. We are unable to treat patients who have severe neurodevelopmental disorders.
Inpatient Treatment
Inpatient care is intended for patients who require round-the-clock care and support to begin their path to better health in a safe, controlled environment.
North Tampa Behavioral Health Hospital offers a specialized inpatient unit for seniors who are experiencing cognitive concerns and other symptoms of mental illness or substance use disorders. We treat patients who enter directly and haven’t received any prior treatment, and we also accept those who are transitioning from a skilled nursing facility or memory care facility.
We are able to accommodate patients who need assistance with activities of daily living or require specialized medical equipment.
Senior adults in our inpatient program spend an average of seven to 10 days with us, though that timeline may vary depending on each patient’s progress and individual needs.
Outpatient Treatment
For senior adults who don’t need 24-hour monitoring and are at a more advanced place in their recovery process, North Tampa Behavioral Health Hospital offers two outpatient options: a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP).
Our PHP is the more intensive of the two programs. Seniors participate in five group therapy sessions per day, five days a week, with an average stay of two weeks. Seniors benefit from the use of treatment modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), the 12-Step method of recovery, and motivational interviewing, and they attend groups that cover topics that are relevant to older adults, such as grief and loss, memory concerns, anger management, and relationship conflict.
Our IOP is ideal for seniors who require some level of structure as they continue in their recovery but still want time to participate in daily living activities outside of treatment. Seniors engage in CBT- and DBT-based programming five days a week initially, attending three group therapy sessions per day, before eventually scaling back to three days of treatment per week. Seniors typically spend anywhere from one to 16 weeks in our IOP.
Both our PHP and IOP offer medication management services.
